care, build, share

This project involves co-living between different age groups and with different levels of care needs. The idea came from considering the current demographic trends, which point to the population getting older, and migration becoming more common. Spaces that consider the needs of the elderly, as well as improve connections between people are necessary.

care

The Dutch government has been encouraging a shift from institutionalized care to more community-based services. Unfortunately, the already existing housing crisis makes this even more difficult, as housing for the elderly and people with support needs becomes even more scarce within regular neighborhoods.

Of the elderly up to 75 years old who want to move, the vast majority prefers to move within their own neighborhood or to move to the center near different facilities (Netherlands' Housing Survey, 2016). This led to the choice for a central area; De Nieuwe Stad, located in Amersfoort.

build

The project is based on understanding that people are diverse, and so should the forms of living be. That is why all houses are different, with unique materials and colors. But to encourage interactions, social areas and kitchens are shared by all those living in the same housing unit. And all houses share the activity areas and community centre.

The choice for materials and colors came from observing the area. Industrial, with pops of bright colors.
